The process of adapting to Montessori kindergartens can be somewhat challenging for both the child and the parents, but with the right approach and support it can become easier and less stressful. Here are some tips on how to help your child undergo a gentle adaptation to kindergarten.
Prepare in advance:
Introduce your child to the idea of a garden and what he will do there.
Visit the kindergarten with your child before school starts so that he finds it a familiar place.
Gradual start:
Consider starting garden teaching on a reduced schedule and gradually increasing your time there.
Provide the child with the opportunity to gradually adapt to the new regime.
Talk to your child:
Ask your child about his impressions and feelings in the garden.
Try to talk about the positive aspects of the garden and emphasize that it is a place for fun and learning.
Create rituals together:
Rituals, such as saying goodbye to parents, help the child understand that he will return to his family after kindergarten.
Make the separation process relaxed and positive.
Let your child express his feelings:
Let your child talk about his feelings and fears around the garden.
Listen to your child and support him in these conversations.
Encourage independence:
Supporting your child to try to do things on their own will increase their self-confidence.
Retreat when necessary:
If your child has a hard time with separation, he may want you with him at the beginning. Give her this opportunity, and then gradually begin to retreat.
Find common interests:
Finding friends or play partners in the garden can make adjustment much easier.
Be patient:
Remember that each child adapts at his own pace. Some may take longer than others.
Support and faith:
Constantly emphasize to your child that you believe in his ability to adapt and cope with a new situation.
Remember that adjustment is an individual process and may take different lengths for different children. The main thing is to provide the child with support, understanding, and time to adapt to the new environment.
Especially at Montessori school, we have developed a procedure for soft and easy adaptation. Usually, these are well-coordinated joint actions of the teacher and parents and, if necessary, a child psychologist, which makes it possible within 2-3 weeks to interest the child in attending kindergarten without psycho-emotional trauma.
The result of a child’s first great success is when he is able to let go of his parents and join his team.
“During the adaptation period, teachers monitor the child and behave in the same manner as the parents, so the child perceives it more friendly. By creating comfortable conditions for the child, we build a trusting relationship with him and set him up to visit the garden with pleasure.
The timing of full adaptation is individual for each child. In general, adaptation to a Montessori school kindergarten lasts from 2 to 4 weeks, subject to the continuity of the educational process.
