Maria Montessori Method – Basics

Основые методики Марии Монтессори

Montessori early development method

Maria Montessori’s method is based on raising a child to be confident and independent and involves teaching the child independence from the age of 1.5 years!

How does learning happen?

It is important for parents to understand that when teaching a child using the Montessori method, you will have to completely trust your child. Do not help or suggest if the child can cope on his own and does not ask for help.

The same situation is in the kindergarten. Your child will be entirely devoted to himself. The teacher will always be nearby, but will not interfere in the learning process and familiarization with Montessori material.

If a child cannot figure it out, he can ask the teacher for help or another child.

The role of an adult is not to interfere in the learning process, just to be there, observe and be ready to help if the child asks him to.

A kindergarten teacher or parent should show by example how to use things and objects and teach the child how to use them.

1. Organization of Montessori space

For a child, the world around him is like the world of a giant, in which he cannot reach anything without the help of adults. In order for a child to feel like an equal, you need to:

organize your child’s personal space
equip it with a small table and chair,
put a small wardrobe, chest of drawers
Place shelves on the walls that are easy to reach, etc.

2. Self-care training

It is necessary to teach the child independence:

dress and undress;
unfasten buttons or zippers on clothing;
tie and untie shoelaces;
eat and clean up after yourself;
brush your teeth and wash your face;
choose material for classes and return it back to the shelf.

The main thing is NOT to prevent your child from becoming independent!

3. Desire for independent learning

A child should never be forced to study! All his actions must be voluntary.

In order for a child to want to study and learn, it is necessary to lay out educational material (note, not toys!) on shelves within the child’s field of vision.
As soon as the child reaches for any material, you should observe how the child interacts with the material.
If your child can’t do something, don’t try to do it for him. Be patient and wait for your child to ask for help. If suddenly a child has lost interest in the material, you should not force him to understand it, just take this material and show him how to use it.

The main points of organizing teaching activities according to the method of Maria Montessori are applicable both in kindergarten and at home. We will talk about this in more detail in the following articles.
